Theme Park Day

Theme Park Day

Now I know compared to the people I have chatted with on the PAPA System I am the young kid. Well heck, for that matter I am the young kid on any frequency I have worked over my short span of being on ham radio.

On my way home from work today I made a new contact, WA6QTD. So I thought. Once running the call sign in QRZ I can see I memorized the wrong call letters. Hopefully I will chat with this person again soon and here is why.

Today I found out there was an amusement park called Pacific Ocean Park (POP) at the end of Ocean Park Blvd from 1958 to 1967. In all honestly I had to question the other station to be sure that they were not talking about the Santa Monica pier.

Sadly I also found out that it burned down in 1970 and as I now know – it is no longer there. If you look at the following link you will see this pier really had it all ( However the best part of my contact was hearing this gentleman talk about my home town… heck for that matter my home neighborhood. Moreover, I could hear the excitement in his voice as he told me about how he used to flip burgers and cook hot dogs during the 1950’s at POP. While our conversation spanned from Whileshire Blvd and the 405 to my residence (20 minutes or so). I was able to learn so much about POP and how as kids back then he was able to rent a boat and go fishing with his friends and if they were lucky afford to take a boat all day. I have to say it was so neat to hear about all these different areas of my town and how they have changed over the past 50 years. I can only imagine.

Ironically later that same night I was able to make another contact with KD6YPU “Terry” who works at the mouse empire while he was on break. What are the chances of a) talking to someone who also worked at a theme park. Also what are the chances of b) both theme parks opening within 2 years of one another.

I don’t know about you but the 1950’s seem like they were fun and allowed for revolutionary changes in entertainment.

CQ… CQ… CQ… this is KK6AKN <cricket chirping sounds>
